Darhower, M. (2006). Where's the community?: Bilingual internet chat and the "Fifth C" of the National Standards. Hispania, 89(1), (84-98).

This study, of interest to undergraduate language educators, analyses chat-room communication during a 10-week period between 20 fourth semester L1 English speakers learning Spanish at a public university in North Carolina and 20 intermediate L1 Spanish speakers learning English. During this collaboration, the students had weekly bilingual chats for 1 hour, 30 minutes in Spanish and 30 minutes in English. Darhower looked at the bilingual communication through the lens of the National Standards and suggesedt an update of the conceptualization of the Communities Standard by creating a third standard-- being an active participant in a community of speakers of the language.
