Beyer, T. R. (2000). What Standards? Standards---so what?. ADFL Bulletin, 31(2), (59-60).

Of interest to higher education faculty and administrators, the article present's the author's personal views of the Standards and postsecondary instructor. The authors points out how much of the Standards reform has failed to reach higher education in part because faculty are not informed and in part because they are not comfortable with a perceived emphasis on communication and little c culture at the expense of more "intellectual pursuits." He stresses how three Standards (communication, connections, and comparisons) offer a balance for the focus in language classes brought forth by the proficiency guidelines. He stresses the value of these three Standards in particular for the curriculum and also the hope that the Standards will facilitate high school-postsecondary articulation.
