Stewart, J. A. & Santiago, K. A. (2006). Using the literary text to engage language learners in a multilingual community. Foreign Language Annals, 39(4), (683-696).

Teachers who have ready access to urban settings with multilingual and multicultural diversity will be inspired by this article describing how a literary text (in this case Esmeralda Santiago's autobiography When I Was Puerto Rican) mediated an encounter between students of different cultures. The authors drew on all of the Five Cs to prepare their students for the encounter, however they note that Communities is the most challenging—and, in the end, the most rewarding.
