Abrate, J. (1999). Using authentic documents: Making connections to the wider world . In Nerenz, A. (Ed.), Standards for a New Century. (pp. 75-88). Lincolnwood, IL: National Textbook Company.

This article proposes a reconsideration of authentic documents to include more than just texts. The author explores definitions of authentic documents and reasons to include authentic documents in the curriculum centering on the Standards. The author then provides two detailed activities (train travel and the place of food in France) that use diverse forms of authentic documents (recipes, songs, videos, travel brochures, audio recordings). Each activity is composed of several sub-activities for each of the 5C's.
