Larson, P. (2006). The return of the text: A welcome challenge for less commonly taught languages. Modern Language Journal, 90(2), (255-258).

Teachers of LTCLs will be interested in this article. The author (a teacher of Japanese) notes that reading and writing are fundamental for the content-rich learning proposed in the Standards and that this focus on literacy can be daunting for teachers and learners of LCTLs. She recommends rethinking learning goals with regard to reading and writing; she also recommends broadening the definition of texts to include maps, signs, advertisements, and menus that can be analyzed as social and cultural constructs rather than just linguistic messages to decode. The author proposes that the use of English and resources available through computer technology are particularly important for learners of LCTLs.
