Allen, L. Q. (2008). The impact of teachers' beliefs on implementing curricular changes . In Siskin, H. J. (Ed.), From thought to action: Exploring beliefs and outcomes in the foreign language program. (pp. 30-47). Boston: Heinle.

This author briefly describes the Standards, noting the ways in which the Standards can guide curriculum development. The author provides a useful table of the ways in which a Standards- based curriculum differs from traditional FL teaching. The author then provides a review of research on FL teachers' beliefs toward the Standards. The author then presents a case study on one secondary French teacher's beliefs and classroom practices, the way she weaves the Standards through her curriculum, and the emphasis she gives to teaching the language system. The author found an inverse relationship between the teacher's stated beliefs about the Standards and her actual teaching practice. The author puts forth a call for experienced teachers to integrate the Standards into their teaching stating that we cannot rely only on new teachers to incorporate the Standards into their teaching, as teachers often teach the way they were taught.
