Schultz, J. M. (2002). The Gordian knot: Language, literature, and critical thinking . In Scott, V. M. & Tucker, H. (Ed.), SLA and the literature classroom: Fostering dialogues. (pp. 3-31). Boston: Heinle.

In this chapter, of particular interest to university-level language program directors and teachers, Schultz proposes the literary text as central to the Standards-based curriculum. She describes how literature provides an interdisciplinary dimension to language study, allowing language students to develop cognitive strategies and critical thinking skills. An example from the redesigned curriculum at UC Berkeley is presented, in which intermediate French students read Zola's "The Attack on the Mill".
