This two-semester long study investigated the effect of email dialogue journaling in promoting L2 learning inside and outside of the classroom. Fifty students in a second-semester Spanish course were offered the chance to increase their participation grade via email communication with their Spanish instructor. Through analysis of the discourse of the electronic exchanges, this study suggests that computer mediated communication (CMC may result in greater language production, more varied topics, greater language accuracy, more student-initiated interactions, and more personalized language use than traditional paper-and-pencil tasks.
