This article will interest teachers and curriculum planners of all levels. Hall offers the reader an overview of the theories and empirical research that support the Communication goal and its three Standards, laying out a pedagogy of language learning that leads to meeting the Standards. She then gives a review of the research on classroom discourse, ending with a frame for a pedagogy of FL learning organized around the Communication goal and Standards, including assessment and the implications for further research.
