This article would provide ideas to university language programs administrators on ways to implement the Standards into their curriculum. Primarily, the author argues for the need of incentives to combat the resistance or indifference in implementing the Standards at the university level, especially in upper-division courses at large research universities. The author describes the need for change in the profession, particularly in upper-division literature courses, to meet learners' need for high levels of linguistic and cultural competence and to increase enrollments.
