Kauffmann, R. (2002). Teaching for tolerance: Community-based learning for the Spanish classroom . In Crouse, G. K., Doering, S. K. & Smith, C. F. (Ed.), Sustaining Change: New Directions as Standard Practice. (pp. 119-127). Eau Claire, WI: Crown Prints.

This chapter is of particular interest to undergraduate foreign language educators. Kauffmann, a Spanish-language educator, explores the rationale and implementation of community-based learning in the undergraduate intermediate-level setting. By providing a description of the community-based service-learning unit that her students completed, she is able to expose many challenges and contribute helpful guidelines and suggestions for future community-based learning projects. These projects can help motivate students to improve not only their language skills but also to develop relationships and to break down class and racial differences, and to engage in their learning.
