Arens, K. (2009). Teaching culture: The Standards as an optic on curriculum development . In Scott, V. M. (Ed.), Principles and Practices of the Standards in College Foreign Language Education. (pp. 160-180). Boston: Henle.

This rereading of the Standards to redefine learning language as learning culture will be of interest to college-level teachers. Drawing on Bourdieu's theories, the author re-interprets the Cultures standard and describes a culture-based curriculum in which learning culture is the overarching framework for learning language as well as other symbolic systems within a particular community. The author rewrites each of the 5 C's and offers a detailed description of this broadened understanding of a culture curriculum.
