Teaching Ayala: A thematic, standards-based approach

08-29-2011 12:00

Oxford, R. (2006). Teaching Ayala: A thematic, standards-based approach. Hispania, 89(4), (814-822).

This article would be of interest to high-school and post-secondary teachers of Spanish, but it could serve as a model for teaching literary content in other languages. It presents ideas for addressing the National Standards through thematic units based on the life and works of one literary author, Francisco Ayala. Oxford proposes a learning scenario called "twentieth-century collage", which requires research and oral and written presentation of information on this Spanish writer (historical context, music and art of the period, literary excerpts, etc.). The article details how this thematic unit develops the knowledge and abilities outlined in all 5 Cs.
