This chapter will be of most interest to those who teach French, but more specifically those who reside in the Midwestern part of the United States. The author discusses an interesting approach to engaging learners in the Communities goal area of the National Standards through studying French explorers and settlers in this region of the country, communicating across time, linking students with Francophone communities from several centuries ago. The author suggests activities and projects, integrating interdisciplinary content.
