This research study would interest teachers as well as researchers, especially those working in Spanish. The study, with 29 community college heritage learners, documents (often ambivalent) attitudes about fluency and ability to function in reading and writing. A specialized second-year class centered around activities fostering the Communications Standard's interpersonal, interpretative, and presentation modes. Several activities are suggested: an oral history ethnic portfolio, life story interviews, and reflection essays, all of which help these learners to consolidate cultural knowledge of the two worlds their experience bridges.
