Abrate, J. (1998). Standards for teaching cultures: The National Standards and the AATF framework . In Alley, D. & Heusinkveld, P. (Ed.), Communications, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities. (pp. 19-25). Valdosta, GA: Southern Conference on Language Teaching.

The article is relevant for readers with an interest in curriculum development. It compares the goal area Culture of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for the 21st Century with a statement developed simultaneously and independently by the AATF National Commission of Cultural Competence. Abrate focuses in particular on the teaching of Culture. She concludes that, although the AATF framework for cultural competence was not written as an off-shoot of the ACTFL Standards, its structure and progress indicators fit very closely with the Cultures goal.
