Blackmon, C. & Pagcaliwagan, L. (1997). Small world language and culture for children: FLEX and the new Standards . In Terry, R. M. (Ed.), Addressing the Standards for Foreign Language Learning. (pp. 99-114). Valdosta, GA: Southern Conference on Language Teaching.

This chapter describes a pre-Standards project at the K-2 level that introduced children to Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Project goals and philosophies follow those embodied by the Standards, as students are exposed to language and culture through interdisciplinary lessons. The authors reflect on how this project was perceived by students, parents, and teachers. This chapter would interest elementary school administrators and teachers who might consider similar methods in their own classrooms.
