Seventeen values of foreign language study

Frantz, A. C. (1996). Seventeen values of foreign language study. ADFL Bulletin, 28(1), (44-49).

This article presents a survey of FL department faculty at the postsecondary level. The findings should be of broader interest, however, to educators at earlier levels as well. In the survey, the chairs indicated whether they felt FL study was important for a series of reasons given in the professional literature. They were also asked to write in additional values for foreign language study. The additional values given included notions that correspond to the two Connections Standards, 3.1 and 3.2. The author considers the notion of a conflict of goals between literary study and practical language use (the literacy vs. competency debate) to conclude that, based on the reasons for language study given by the collegiate faculty, this dichotomy is false and unproductive.
