This report, written shortly after the publication of the National Standards, would be of interest to those who study the history of the Standards movement in the United States, as well as higher education faculty who want to improve implementation of the Standards at their level. The report seeks to synthesize two responses to the national Standards from higher education, which appeared as ACTFL issues papers by Dorothy James (1998) and Elizabeth Welles (1998). The author compares and contrasts the positions taken in the two reports and ends with a composite list of compatible suggestions for future action: increased dissemination of the Standards in Higher Education, increased articulation of programs K-16, a closer look at assessments used across levels, and improved placement policies and instruments.#All #Principalfocus #JournalArticle #Standards #All5Cs #All #PolicyorAdministrative
