Schulz, R. A. (2006). Reevaluating communicative competence as a major goal in postsecondary language requirement courses. Modern Language Journal, 90(2), (252-255).

Those concerned with outcomes of FL instruction, particularly in postsecondary institutions, will find this article interesting. The author argues that the profession has ignored the purpose and role of this instruction within general education requirements, asking what can the study of other languages contributes to the general education of college/university students. She highlights the NSFLL and the proficiency scale as being anchored in communicative competence but ignores the place of L2 study in Gen Ed requirements.
