Dykstra, L. D. (2009). Reconceptualizing the goals for Foreign Language Learning: The role of pragmatics instruction . In Scott, V. M. (Ed.), Principles and Practices of the Standards in College Foreign Language Education. (pp. 86-105). Boston: Heinle.

Teachers interested in pragmatics instruction will benefit from this article. The author argues that neither the Standards nor the 2007 MLA report offer satisfactory models for re-envisioning college language education. After a review of the literature on pragmatics, speech act studies, the notion of formality in language, and metapragmatics, the author proposes that the inclusion of pragmatics instruction promotes true competence in a second language. The author further contends that teaching pragmatics is particularly important with regard to the development of cultural awareness.
