Kern, R. (2008). Making connections through texts in language teaching. Language Teaching, 41(3), (367-387).

Of interest to teachers and curriculum planners of all languages and levels, this article focuses on the Connections Standard. The author argues for linking language and literature study to other disciplines (e.g., art, music, film history) and for getting students to experience unique viewpoints available only through a particular language and culture. Kern demonstrates how analyzing texts (written, oral, visual, audio-visual) in language teaching helps students to make connections between language and other symbolic ways of making meaning in a cultural frame.
