This research investigates the role of the literary text in intermediate-level instruction, examining one classroom environment as a model. The article elucidates links between the Standards and their implications for incorporating literary texts into an intermediate reading course. Finally, using a sample literary text, Platero y yo, the author suggests specific activities that support learning through concepts embodied in the Standards. This article would be of particular interest to teachers and language program directors.
