In the article, of particular interest to post-secondary German language educators, the author advocates the model kulturexkurse which integrates literary texts into communicative, proficiency-oriented German curriculum to build linguistic and culture competence. According to the author, this model will help language students communicate in German about complex topics, and help them understand. He also describes how a language teacher should use literary texts in accordance with the model and addresses several possible criticisms.
