McAlpine, D. (2000). Is there a place for the National Foreign Language Standards in higher education?. ADFL Bulletin, 31(2), (75-79).

This article would be of particular interest to post-secondary foreign language Department chairs and teacher training programs. The author advocates implementing the Standards in the post-secondary level to promote goals of what university students should "know" and "be able to do" rather than emphasizing the number of semesters of foreign language study. The author also advocates the use of the Standards to promote meaningful articulation from secondary to post-secondary foreign language courses. The author describes how the Standards were successfully implemented into a teaching methods course and the foreign language curriculum at his university. The author further addresses the importance of the learner outcomes at the post-secondary level for each of the five Standards in turn.
