Calvin, L. M. (2005). Graffiti, the ultimate realia: Meeting the Standards through an unconventional culture lesson. Hispania, 88(3), (527-530).

This lesson suggestion would interest teachers of any language at any level. The author proposes to use photographs of graffiti as authentic sources of cultural and linguistic input. Students are asked to think critically about the role of graffiti as communication in contemporary society, and the lesson plan encourages discussion of issues such as register and the historical/local context of this form of written discourse. The author connects the activities in the plan to specific Standards and offers suggestions for follow-up or extension.
