Campbell, C. M. & Duncan, G. (2007). From theory to practice: General trends in foreign language teaching methodology and their influence on language assessment. Language and Linguistics Compass, 1(6), (592-611).

The authors of this article provide an overview of how language-teaching methodology rooted in learning theory has informed language assessment over the past 35 years. The authors first review trends in foreign language pedagogy from the late 1970s to present. They then provide an overview of developments in language assessment from the late 1970s until the creation of the Standards (1996). They conclude by reviewing advances in language assessment from 1996 to the present, providing a detailed example of a Standards-based performance speaking task and assessment rubric.
