Overfield, D. M. (1997). From the margins to the mainstream: Foreign language education and community-based learning. Foreign Language Annals, 30(4), (485-491).

This article is of particular interest to instructors and administrators involved in developing community-based learning (CBL) opportunities to bring together two different communities (i.e. language learners and the Hispanic community) in systematic ways. The National Standards are mentioned inasmuch as they entail the Five Cs, one of which is Communities that offers arguably a natural link with CBL. Kolb's model of CBL is presented and discussed as are various samples of CBL programs for foreign languages.
