Stokes, J. D. (2004). Fostering communicative and cultural proficiency in the Spanish phonetics and phonology course. Hispania, 87(3), (533-540).

This article is of interest to teachers of upper-division L2 linguistics classes (phonetics, syntax, history of the language, etc.); the examples are in Spanish, but the principles discussed are relevant for any language. The author perceives that classes "oriented towards linguistic topics" are not in line with the National Standards and do not contribute to the development of the abilities described in the five C's. He provides a number of suggestions to include in linguistics classes more personalized language, connections to the target-language speaking community, and authentic sources.
