Lear, D. W. & Abbott, A. R. (2008). Foreign language professional standards and CSL: Achieving the 5 C's. Michigan Journal of Service Learning, 14(2), (76-86).

This article will interest researchers and teachers, particularly Spanish teachers and those working with service learning. After describing the 5 Cs, this article gives findings of a qualitative case study with one student, Steve, involved in a fifth-semester community service learning course, "Spanish and Entrepreneurship: Languages, Cultures, and Communities" in Spring 2006. Based on evidence from his journals, written work, and instructor-community partner correspondence, Steve engaged with, and made progress in each C area. The report details the progress in each C area and shows, in particular, how community service learning is especially well suited to the Communities Standards. The article includes pedagogical recommendations based on this successful course and Steve's achievements.
