This article, written in French, addresses issues and challenges facing French teachers of all levels at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In an examination of approaches to communicative language teaching, the author considers the length of curriculum, the emphasis on individual learning and authentic materials, the focus on cultural contexts and the diversity of language, criteria for assessment, and teacher professional development. The examination is done within the context of the National Standards as well as the ACTFL Guidelines and the Common European Framework.
