LaBonty, J. & Borth, L. (2006). El elefante y la hormiga: Writing poetry in foreign language classes. NECTFL Review, 58, (25-36).

This article will interest teachers and curriculum planners. The author argues for the teaching of poetry in foreign language classes in order to enhance learners' use of metaphor and to develop voice. The author notes that learners are often daunted by the writing of extensive paragraphs and that poetry offers them a shorter form and limited framework in which to experiment with language. The article refers specifically to Communication Standards 1.1, 1.2 and1.3 and provides examples of types of poetic forms that learners can acquire.
