This article would be of interest to teachers, language organization historians and program administrators because of the author's historical overview of the AATSP but specifically relative to the National Standards and its antecedents. The author illustrates how this Spanish teacher organization was always concerned with ideas such as communicative competence and methodologies to bring about such competence in Spanish and the teaching of Spanish.
