This chapter provides an historical lens of the integration of culture and language in foreign language education. The author first describes examples of advertisements for commercial language courses to provide insight into the Western mindset toward foreign language learning. The author then provides a historical overview of the role of culture in foreign language pedagogy from the 1960's to present with considerable explanation of intercultural competence theories in the 1990s. The author concludes by situating the creation of the Cultures Standards in the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning within the historical review of the role of culture in foreign language learning.
