Fox, R. K. & Diaz-Greenberg, R. (2006). Culture, multiculturalism, and foreign/world language Standards in U.S. teacher preparation programs: Toward a discourse of dissonance. European Journal of Teacher Education, 29(3), (401-422).

This study will be particularly interesting to pre-service and current world language educators and professors of education. Fox and Diaz-Greenburg analyzed world language teacher candidates' perception of Culture and the role and incorporation of Culture in their classrooms at two American universities. Four major themes were produced by the study participants: importance of embedding culture, deeper/richer interpretation of culture, role of the textbook in cultural integration, and dialogue/hands on learning used to promote deep cultural understandings. In order to move past surface culture (food, festivals, folklore, and fashion), the authors suggest that critical pedagogy and multicultural education can help language educators integrate culture into their curriculum. They conclude that it is important for language learners to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of cultural knowledge.
