Bragger, J. D. & Rice, D. B. (1998). Connections: The National Standards and a new paradigm for content-oriented materials and instruction . In Harper, J., Lively, M. & Williams, M. (Ed.), The Coming of Age of the Profession: Issues and Emerging Ideas for the Teaching of Foreign Languages. (pp. 191-217). Boston: Heinle.

In this book chapter, Bragger and Rice define content-based instruction and elucidate the paradigm shift in language teaching under the National Standards, with a special focus on Connections. They focus on Krashen's developmental modal (i +1) to describe the unpreparedness of students, especially with regard to the language/content gap, in foreign language education. Several examples for content-based learning are provided in French. This chapter would be especially relevant to teachers and language program coordinators seeking to ease the transition between levels.
