Of interest especially to teachers at the community college level, this article describes the successes of a teacher at a community college serving an academically, economically, and culturally diverse student population. Working from backward design (from product desired and assessment to learning tasks), it offers a series of activities applicable to many languages (self-assessment, visuals and props, phonemic/orthographic association, color coding, symbols and shapes, manipulatives, posters and posting, graphic organizers). Of particular value in this article is an appendix that relates performance assessments to the National Standards.
