Authorizing the foreign language student

This article demonstrates Bourdieu's model as a basis for a pedagogy that authorizes students by enabling them to use their existing cognitive skills to examine the symbolic power of a text. An authentic video segment from German TV is used to illustrate the authorizing process. The author notes that this pedagogy develops students in all five goal areas of the National Standards and encourages students to assess video discourses as examples of symbolic power.
