Byrnes, H. (2008). Articulating a foreign language sequence through content: A look at the culture Standards. Language Teaching, 41(1), (103-118).

In this article, of particular interest to language educators at all levels, Byrnes examines the challenges of curricular articulation and the integration of cultural knowledge with language development over extended sequences. Byrnes first analyses the Standards's content goals related to communication and culture and then several challenges relating to linking language and culture in an educational setting that focused on the use of text. She concludes that teaching language and content together is best done through a genre-based curriculum and by using genre-basked tasks for informing pedagogical decisions. Learners may be able to advance toward a competent cultural literacy that is language-based.
