A ceiling effect for communicative language teaching?

Rifkin, B. (2006). A ceiling effect for communicative language teaching?. Modern Language Journal, 90(2), (262-264).

This commentary will interest teachers, administrators, and program assessors. Rifkin responds to assertions that the less than desirable outcomes in post-secondary programs are the result of the proficiency and Standards movement. He cites a lack of collaboration within departments and sequences of unrelated courses as the primary issues facing higher education. In addition, he suggests that the resources (i.e., textbooks, websites, videos) available for lower-level courses are sparse at best in upper levels. He recommends collaborative curriculum development efforts guided by the Proficiency Guidelines and the Standards.
