Description:

The ACTFL Research Briefs Task Force will be tasked with reviewing and updating the current What the Research Shows section on the ACTFL website.  Briefs will be short (1000-1500 word) reports on our knowledge from the research relating to a variety of topics.  These Research Briefs will be intended for an audience of stakeholders who are unlikely to read widely in language teaching and learning research including:

  • pK-12 and higher education administrators
  • legislators
  • state boards of education
  • school board members
  • students, and
  • parents

Language educators should be considered a secondary audience.

The Research Briefs will have a general focus related to world (non-English) language education in the United States. They will address questions that we are commonly asked about language teaching and learning and focus on those questions that can be answered by research that has already been conducted in the field.

The Research Briefs will be published on the public ACTFL website, with the potential for crossover publication in the ACTFL flagship publications (Foreign Language Annals and The Language Educator), and complemented by standalone pamphlets and handouts for conference exhibits and advocacy initiatives.

ACTFL is creating a Research Briefs Task Force, chaired by Dr. Pamela Wesely, that will be charged with moving this project forward. Activities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying authors
  • Establishing review and editorial procedures
  • Establishing deadlines and timelines.

Members of the Task Force will include research scholars and research consumers from the ACTFL community. All individuals interested in making research accessible to a broad audience are encouraged to volunteer, regardless of formal research experience. Applicants should have the ability to summarize research, and must be able to demonstrate a history of such a background (e.g. FLA article, other published articles, or a thesis/paper showing summarized research).

Task force term is for a period of two-years, applicants must be a current member when applying, and must remain a member for the duration of their term. Volunteers may serve on a maximum of one ACTFL committee/task force at a time (including SIG Officers/Board Committees/Awards Committees).

Applicants should expect approximately 10 hours commitment per month to the task force.

Applicants should be U.S.-based or have extensive knowledge of the U.S. education system.
