We would like to thank you for expressing interest in taking a leadership position within ACTFL. The purpose of the Convention Committee is to ensure that the program content of the annual convention consists of rich, diverse, relevant subject matter. To reach this goal, the committee considers needs assessment surveys and trends in the language teaching community to deliver content in formats that attract a large audience and provide excellent overall professional development for those attending.
The Convention Committee consists of seven members of ACTFL who are passionate about ensuring that the annual convention has a quality program that meets the needs of language educators at all levels of instruction. Members of the committee meet monthly via Zoom calls and face-to-face twice each year if conditions allow. They provide advice, share ideas and work to strengthen and build upon our events, activities and our organization’s mission statement.
We are excited about the upcoming year and look forward to receiving your completed application materials. Selection of the Convention Committee is an important process in our organization. There will be at least three slots to be filled for the coming year. With stringent standards in mind, potential committee members for consideration will be individuals who:
- Can bring a variety of skills, experience, and diversity to the organization.
- Are sensitive to and tolerant of different views and opinions.
- Are friendly, responsive, patient, and have a sense of humor.
- Work well with individuals and groups.
- Consistently work hard to meet deadlines.
- Can listen, analyze, and think creatively.
- Are willing to prepare for and attend committee meetings and participate in the annual convention.
- Will take responsibility and follow through on assignments.
- Create a positive environment.
Length of Term: The ACTFL President will appoint a Chair of the Convention Committee along with six at-large members who rotate off after of two years of service. At the conclusion of that term, an existing committee member may apply for a subsequent one-year term on the committee. There will be one ACTFL Board member appointed as a liaison to the Committee. The Chair of the Convention Committee will remain on as past chair for one year after the conclusion of their two-year term for continuity.

4. Describe any experience you have had during your professional or volunteer career addressing issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion and how that experience would translate to improving in the convention experience.
