The Wilga M. Rivers Award honors the memory of an internationally renowned scholar and author, and one of the first women to be appointed to a full Professorship at Harvard. She was a perennial member of TESOL and a recognized national and international authority on the psychological and linguistic aspects of language teaching. She was the author and coauthor of 13 books and nearly 80 articles on various aspects of language teaching.  
 
The Florence Steiner Award honors the memory of a teacher, department chair, professional speaker, and ACTFL President-Elect who was widely known and appreciated for her professional knowledge, her ability to communicate with teachers, and her wit. Working from her position as World Language Department Chair in the Glenbrook, Illinois, Public Schools, she inspired a generation of world language teachers and challenged them to improve their teaching through better communication of the goals and outcomes of second language education with the public, administrators, colleagues, and students. 
 
The  Anthony Papalia Award honors a teacher, educator, and author who significantly influenced the lives of countless students and practicing teachers. His tenure at the State University of New York, Buffalo, service to the State of New York through work with the New York State Education Department, and involvement in the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) were characterized by selfless dedication to improving the quality of teachers and teaching.  
 
The NYSAFLT Anthony Papalia Award was established by ACTFL in 1987 to recognize a world language educator who has demonstrated excellence in the preparation and continuing education of teachers for the profession. It is supported by NYSAFLT. 
 
We are currently seeking volunteers to serve on this Awards Committee. Committee members review the dossiers of those nominated and rate them on a provided evaluation rubrics. 
 
Requirements: 
Volunteers should have a background in language teaching. 
 
Number of hours committed varies depending on the number of nominations received, generally 35 hours. 
 
Approximately 2-5 volunteer committee members are selected to serve for the awards cycle each year. They are notified in early June; work begins in late June and is completed online. Nomination materials are posted on the Awards Community for committee members to access, along with a rubric. Deadlines will be set by the committee chair and passed along to the committee. 
 
Volunteers currently serving on another ACTFL Committee (SIG Officers, Board Committee, etc.) are not eligible to apply. Volunteers are limited to service on one committee at a time and must remain an ACTFL member for the duration of their committee term.
