Grit, Emotions, and Motivation: What Drives CFL Learners

In recent years, individual difference factors in second language learning—particularly affective and conative variables such as motivation, grit, enjoyment, and anxiety—have gained significant research attention. However, little is known about how these factors interact within the context of Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) classroom in U.S. university programs. This talk introduces a study of over one hundred college-level CFL learners, utilizing both surveys and open-ended responses. Statistical modeling and thematic analysis were employed to examine the connections among enjoyment, grit, anxiety, learner motivation, and learning engagement. The findings highlight the particularly powerful roles of perseverance of effort and supportive learning communities, both inside and outside the classroom, in shaping learners’ persistence and engagement.
