Erst die Arbeit, dann... Was? Teaching Work Cultures as a Bridge between German Studies and Career Readiness

What does it mean to work — and who gets to define it? This webinar presents approaches and materials from a seminar on work cultures taught in Spring 2024 for advanced and graduating German students in a 4-year college. The interdisciplinary course created ample opportunity for students to reflect on ethics of work as it translated into their current studies and post-graduation plans.

Drawing on the rich tradition of German-language literature, film, philosophy, and sociology, we examined how work culture has evolved from the 19th century to the present day and how German-speaking authors and thinkers have long grappled with labor's place in human life.

Thinking critically about labor -- its social value, its boundaries, and its future -- provided students with a different form of career readiness, i.e., reflective practices on how German Studies could inform their goals post-graduation.
