Language ideologies are the shared beliefs and assumptions about language and its use in social life. As a shared system of knowledge, language ideologies both reflect and reproduce social differences, shaping how linguistic varieties, speakers, and forms of bi(multi)lingualism are evaluated across individuals, institutions, and societies. In this webinar, I examine how language ideologies operate in multilingual contexts across different levels of the social world in a U.S. Midwestern city. Drawing on two empirical projects, including a study of community language ideologies in linguistic landscapes and a study of a multilingual elementary world language classroom, I show how ideologies about language are (re)produced, circulated, and taken up across spaces, and how they shape the identities of individuals and communities. I conclude by discussing what these findings mean for world language teaching and teacher education and by sharing possible approaches for developing ideological clarity in work with students and teacher candidates.
