I have been teaching Spanish since 1985, and have never liked assigning Spanish names. Instead of Spanish names I call my students Sr. or Srta. Smith, Jones or whatever his or her name happen to be. I believe that that is sufficient for maintaining the target language alive in the classroom. The students feel a little funny at the beginning of school; however they end up calling each other Sr. or Srta. I love it!
