Looking to contribute your experience as an educator to help boost the teacher recruitment pipeline? This is the opportunity for you!
We’re currently building the 2022 selection committee for the Lead with Languages Teacher Scholarship Program. Composed of language educators, this committee will select the incoming class of Lead with Languages Teacher Scholars—students who will begin their undergraduate experiences this autumn with a goal of joining the language teaching profession.
To address the critical shortage of U.S. language educators, ACTFL launched the Lead with Languages Teacher Scholarship Program in Spring 2019. Ten recipients have been selected to participate during each year of the program to date.
This award provides merit-based scholarships to graduating high school seniors committed to pursuing the language teaching profession in languages other than English. The program provides recipients with an award of $1,500 per academic year; scholarships may be renewed three times following the initial award, for a cumulative total of $6,000 per recipient.
Lead with Languages Teacher Scholars will also receive complimentary ACTFL membership—which includes access to the ACTFL Mentoring Program aimed at early-career language educators—during their participation in the program as well as for one year following graduation and entry into the teaching field.
As a member of the selection committee you will:
- Review and assess student application materials using a provided evaluation rubric.
- Select the new class (up to 10) of Lead with Languages Teacher Scholars to receive awards.
- Liaise with ACTFL Outreach Manager, Erin Whelchel, throughout the process.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Preferred qualities include:
- Experience teaching and/or mentoring high school students or undergraduates
- Previous participation on a scholarship selection committee (preferred, but not required)
