Although learning languages has always been regarded as a "good" thing snd an indication of an educated person, the negative values that have been assigned to certain populations has caused some languages to be demonized and devalued. The push for "English only" policies in states throughout the US reflect a move toward nativism, xenophobia, and ethnocentricism that places democracy and US global leadership in jeopardy
