AI and World Education: What can go WRONG, and what can go RIGHT! Artificial intelligence (AI) in education has contributed to technological advances and theoretical innovations as well as having positive pedagogical impact (Bayne, 2015; Roll & Wylie, 2016). However, AI has its limitations because “gone are the days when anyone would suggest that language could be taught on its own as only discrete grammar points” (Glisan & Donato, 2021) p. 66). In this webinar, the researchers discuss how they have used AI to teach Spanish framed in the 3 Modes of Communication. Speakers Pete Swanson, PhD is Professor of Spanish at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He serves as the Division Chief for Spanish and Portuguese. His research focuses on the shortage of world language teachers and the identity of highly effective world language teachers.
Major M. Ryan Richey is the Director of Operations at the 31st Intelligence Squadron at Fort Gordon, Georgia where he leads a unit of 231 Airmen to prosecute language and signals analysis for that country's highest priority national security issues. His research focuses on the use of generative artificial intelligence in the world language classroom, as well as non-native and native teacher and heritage speaker student language teaching abilities.
